Maternity safety training funding

Health Education England (HEE) has announced plans to distribute £8 million across the country to support the vision of making NHS maternity services among the safest in the world.

The announcement follows a commitment made by the Government in November 2015 to reduce the number of stillbirths, neonatal deaths, maternal deaths and brain injuries that occur during or soon after birth by 20% by 2020 and by 50% by 2030.

An £8million Maternity Safety Training Fund, distributed through HEE, will support every NHS trust in England to use multi-disciplinary training to improve their maternity safety, with at least £40,000 available for each trust. In return, trusts are asked to commit to key actions to improve safety.

Apply for funding

This is an exciting opportunity for all maternity units in England to apply for funding to implement a package of multidisciplinary training programmes for all staff involved in the delivery of maternity care with the aim of improving maternity safety and achieving the Government’s ambition.

The funding is intended to support maternity services in developing and maintaining high standards of leadership, teamwork, communication, clinical skills and a culture of safety whilst reducing maternal and fetal harm.

All NHS trusts are encouraged to send their bids to the HEE regional leads (detailed below) to implement a package of multidisciplinary training programmes for all staff involved in maternity care. The Maternity Safety Training Catalogue (downloadable from this page) aims to guide units to select the most suitable training; however it is not comprehensive. If a local or other national provider offers quality assured training that will better meet the aim of improving safety in your unit you are welcome to include this training with justification in your bid.

The application form outlines the details of the bidding process. Please access the documentation in order to learn more and submit your bid.

The deadline for applications to be submitted is 1700 GMT, Friday 18 November 2016.
