Health visitor development and training

Interested in a career in Health Visiting? We detail how you should go about taking your first steps.

If you are interested in studying Health Visiting, you will find training places advertised on NHS jobs. You might also wish to contact the University of your choice to identify the time of year they will be recruiting with local employers to HV training posts. This would usually take place between January and July.

Tuition fees are fully funded and a salary contribution is made to the student (the payment is pro rata for part time study) which is paid via the placement provider organisation. There are full time programmes that take one year to complete and part time programmes which take two years. Some employers may agree to second an employee for the term of the programme to enable them to study and return to work afterwards as a health visitor if they provide those services, however others may insist that candidates hand in their notice to undertake the programme. The processes around HV training are therefore variable depending upon your circumstances.
