Non-registered Medicines Workforce Training

The non-registered medicines workforce needs to feel confident and competent to handle medicines safely and meet patient needs about their medicines. Patients need to feel empowered to make shared decisions about their medicines. To achieve these goals The School of Medicines Optimisation is working to develop high quality accredited training qualifications for non-registered medicines staff that supports, develops and recognises the valuable contribution of our support staff.

Pharmacy Assistants

Pharmacy assistants work as part of a pharmacy team under the direction of a registered pharmacist. Once employed, you will be required to study for an NVQ level 2 certificate in pharmacy service skills and a BTEC level 2 certificate in pharmaceutical science as part of your work based training.

Pharmacy Support Staff

There are a number of roles available if you are interested in working with patients and their medicines in a pharmacy environment. Your training could cover roles such as a Medicines Counter Assistant, a Healthcare Assistant, or a Dispensing Assistant. Search for courses available at local colleges, and see Buttercups Training, The National Pharmacy Association, The Learning Pharmacy as examples of training available.

Care and Support Workers

Care and Support workers work as part of the care team and provide care to patients under direction of registered or qualified professionals. Take a look at the courses below which will give you an understanding of working with medicines and with patients.
