Library and Knowledge

Library and knowledge services

The 29 NHS-funded library services in the South West, Thames Valley and Wessex are local gateways to high quality information and sources of expert help and guidance.

The services on offer include literature searches, information skills training, information alerts, document requests and book loans. The libraries have multi-disciplinary collections of books, reports and journals, computers and printing / copying facilities, and quiet study space. Many provide access for staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Health Education England working across the South West, Thames Valley and Wessex provides funding to the trusts which host the library services, and is responsible for monitoring their quality.  It supports service development through central investment in infrastructure, knowledge systems and staff development, and by facilitating collaborative activity.

Knowledge for Healthcare
“Healthcare library and knowledge services are a powerhouse for education, lifelong learning, research and evidence-based practice. Our ambition is to extend this role so that healthcare knowledge services become business-critical instruments of informed decision-making and innovation”
– Professor Ian Cumming, Chief Executive, Health Education England

Knowledge for Healthcare is Health Education England’s five-year strategic development programme for NHS-funded library services in England.  Library staff in the South West, Thames Valley and Wessex are actively engaged in the delivery of this programme, which seeks to ensure that library services significantly contribute to ensuring that NHS staff, learners, patients and the public always have access to the high quality information they need to make decisions.
