Workforce planning

Providing system-wide leadership and oversight of workforce planning.


With over 1.3 million staff performing over 300 different types of jobs across more than a 1000 different employers, the NHS requires a robust workforce planning process to ensure we have staff in the right numbers, with the right skills and the right values and behaviours to deliver high quality care.

At Health Education England (HEE), part of our core role as an autonomous national body is to provide system wide leadership and oversight of workforce planning, education and training. We will work to ensure that healthcare staff are recruited in the right numbers with the right values and behaviours to support the delivery of excellent healthcare and drive improvement.

The Workforce Strategy and Transformation Team provides objective modelling, analysis and evidence-based recommendations to enable providers and commissioners across Wessex to plan a workforce to meet service need.

The team uses leading edge modelling tools informed by workforce data from a variety of sources including the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) Data Warehouse, NHS Digital and information from trusts. The output of this modelling is key to the development of the annual Education and Training Plan available below in the Related Documents section.

Wessex Workforce Planners Network

The Workforce Strategy and Transformation Team run a Wessex Workforce Planners’ Network.  The network provides briefings and opportunities to discuss hot topics and share best practice.  It is open to any NHS organisation operating within the Wessex.  It meets regularly for face to face discussion.  Meeting are supplemented by on-line discussions in the Wessex Workforce Planners Network forum on e-WIN.

Training Programme for Workforce Planners

The Workforce Strategy and Transformation Team offers bespoke workforce planning training courses based on the Six Steps Framework. These courses can be tailored to focus on your organisational workforce and service priorities. They are usually delivered at your site.

This dedicated resource, provides relevant, up to date intelligence about how you can contribute and support workforce planning in your organisation.  It includes a  benchmarking service which allows comparison of trust level workforce metrics across the region.

NHS Digital
Workforce section provides on a number of national workforce data collections co-ordinated by the HSCISC

iView
This interactive tool enables user defined views of  the HSCIC’s data collections.

Skills for Health
Skills for Health is the Sector Skills Council for Health.  They provide tools, solutions and advice to improve quality and productivity  within the whole healthcare workforce.

National Minimum Dataset for Social Care
The NMDS-SC is an online database which holds data on the adult social care workforce.  It is the leading source of workforce intelligence and holds information on around 25,000 establishments and 700,000 workers across England.  The information  can be viewed electronically by local authority area or at a National or Health Education Wessex Level.
