Planning and commissioning

There are over 300 different careers in the NHS and we commission education and training programmes for 129  different types of healthcare staff, ranging from paramedics and pathologists, midwives and biomedical scientists to GPs and paediatric nurses, and more. Each year we identify the numbers, skills, values and behaviours that employers tell us they need for the future. Please view our Workforce Plan for England. Based on the national plan, we then develop local workforce plans. Our planning and commissioning programmes ensure that the NHS has the right number of staff with the right skills, values and behaviours, in the right areas to provide safe, effective care for patients.

Education Commissioning

The Education Commissioning Team works with NHS Trusts, Education Providers (including Universities and Further Education Colleges), and other health and social care bodies in the public and private sectors. We commission and manage a range of education and development opportunities to support the whole workforce.
