Global Health Fellowships for GP Speciality Trainees

We provide a number of Global Health Fellowships for trainees. These posts include us facilitating, through our partner Africa Health Placements (AHP) (www.ahp.org.za), one year out of programme clinical posts, based in rural community hospitals in South Africa.  Africa Health Placements is an organisation with a mission: to support and enhance healthcare systems in Africa, by finding, placing and retaining the right people for the job.

Applications for Global Health Fellowships will be made after successful recruitment to GP training in the north east and north Cumbria through the National Recruitment process and will involve competitive interview. We anticipate offering up to 19 Global Health Fellowships to trainees commencing GP specialty training in February 2017. The opportunity is also open to those that commenced GP training in August 2016

Successful applicants for Global Health Fellowships will undertake a year in South Africa within the context of time Out Of Programme (OOP) as described in our guidelines. The OOP posts in South Africa will be undertaken at the end of ST2 and trainees will then return to complete their pre-arranged ST3.

Full support is given to all Global Health Fellows prior to departure, during the 12 months away, and upon your return back to the UK. Opportunities will exist to undertake a Diploma in Tropical Medicine – bursaries may be available for this.

This is an opportunity to gain experience that will both compliment your GP training and lead some to further develop a career incorporating global health.  Previous trainees who have completed the year in Africa invariably describe the experience as life-changing.

The fellowship can be completed on any of our the three training programmes. These are NorthumbriaDurham Tees Valley, and North Cumbria - webpage in development.
