Breaking Down the Barriers training materials launched for national use

18 February 2017

On 19 January, 140 delegates attended the Breaking Down the Barriers – Putting mental and physical health on an equal footing launch event, held at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The conference launched the Breaking Down the Barriers materials; a suite of 14 mental and physical health training awareness packages and modules for the NHS workforce, which were developed in collaboration between UCLPartners, Health Education England and NHS primary and secondary care organisations in north central and east London.

The programme aims to support the NHS workforce and multidisciplinary teams working in and across primary and secondary care settings by equipping them with the appropriate knowledge, information and skills to create initial awareness of conditions, recognise symptoms, assess situations, treat people appropriately, and improve both the mental and physical health needs of the population

The launch event featured a wide range of discussions and presentations from key speakers from Public Health England, NHS England and UCLPartners. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from a NHS service user, who emphasised the urgent need for more awareness within the NHS workforce on the intersection between mental and physical health and how this is managed to avoid people falling through ‘gaps’ in the service.

A key aim of this work is to facilitate and encourage collaborative working and the sharing of resources and training delivery arrangements between NHS trusts. The education and training materials cover the following areas:

  • Mental health awareness in emergency and urgent care settings
  • Physical health awareness in mental health settings
  • Child and adolescent mental health awareness training for GP practices in primary care
  • Child and adolescent learning disabilities awareness training for GP practices in primary care.

The resources are a combination of classroom training, videos, simulation training, presentations, case based scenarios, case studies, tutorials and quizzes.

Breaking Down the Barriers awareness training materials are free to the NHS and downloadable via http://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/breaking-down-the-barriers/.
