Safe prescribing programme
Nationally, as many as 10 per cent of prescriptions written in hospitals may contain errors. These errors adversely affect the effectiveness of care and can have potentially serious implications for patient safety.
Building on work begun in a local trust, HEKSS has developed an assessment tool for trusts to use with newly appointed junior doctors. The tool assesses each individual’s ability to prescribe safely and identifies any related training needs.
Trusts can then offer their staff tailored training from an online package commissioned by HEKSS. Where individuals need significant support, this can be provided in person. Using the assessment tool means that training and education resources can be deployed where they are most needed.
All trusts in Kent, Surrey and Sussex use the tool and training package, along with some in South London. Work is currently underway to extend the work to support safer prescribing among nurses and pharmacists.
