Assessments and Revalidation

We help deliver HEE’s mandate by supporting the education of doctors/dentists in training from foundation to Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). We organise all Annual Reviews of Competence Progression (ARCP) and advise panel members, ensuring educational progress of doctors is fairly assessed, at least annually, in line with regulatory and General Medical Council (GMC) and General Dental Council (GDC) requirements. We provide data to the GMC annually and produce reports to regulators and HEE as required. If a doctor disagrees with their ARCP outcome, we facilitate their request for appeal. We also guide doctors in training through revalidation, gathering information to support the responsible officer in recommending doctors as fit to practise. To support this, we run specialist training to guide educators in their role and work with HEE colleagues to develop and improve regional and national processes.

The patient

The annual assessment, of the educational progress of doctors in training and their fitness to practise, contributes to ensure patient safety by allowing our specialties to assess in detail an individual’s current competencies and skills to make reasonable adjustments to their training programme to ensure patients receive the best possible care.

The learner

The learner (doctor/dentist in training) is the main focus of our team’s work. We facilitate the assessment of their educational progress, demonstrating they have achieved the appropriate competences for their training programme and stage of training. We support trainees in completing their CCT application to enable them to apply for consultant posts and we confirm they are fit to practise.

The stakeholder

Stakeholders include colleges, Health Education England, local trusts and employers, GMC and the GDC. We supply educators with training and administrative support to perform their role as assessors. We ensure trainees are assessed as per the college’s curriculum. We supply our stakeholders with the data on how the trainees are progressing.

The tax-payer

Organisation of ARCPs is cost and time efficient and team budget is used effectively, providing value for money. Training and support for educators is provided internally, reducing requirement for external services and facilitating focus on patient care. Reducing paper resources by working electronically. Additional training time provided sparingly and appropriately.
