GP fellowships in the East Midlands

These exciting new posts are offered by Health Education England - East Midlands to all GPs qualifying within two years of completing your CCT.

Due to the high volume of applications, and our wish to give applicants a clear response earlier, we are shortening the application window due to receiving more applications than funding available. All applications, (new and extensions) will be considered at the same time.  Projects aligning to HEE priorities including delivery of the GP Forward View and local need will be given priority and offers for some fellowships will only be made for localities where there is demonstrable local need and/or alignment to current or planned projects. Fellowship proposals which appear to be largely for the Continuing Professional Development of the applicant will not be successful.

GP Fellowships are jointly funded by HEE and the GP practice where you will work. They are available across Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. You will have up to two days each week (4 sessions) working on a project which can be a research project or a work placement to enhance your career development. You could choose to work with a GP commissioner in the CCG, the LMC in medical politics, or the medical school teaching programmes. Alternatively you could bring secondary care services into the community such as dermatology, palliative care or many other options. You will have a supervisor on the project to help and guide you.

Your qualification

You will have at least one day a week (2 sessions) to study for a qualification related to your project, such as a Certificate in Medical Education, Diploma in Elderly Care, or a standalone qualification such as working towards the MSc in Medical Leadership and Advanced Professional Skills, and HEE EM will pay your academic fees up to £3000.

Your practice

For your two days (4 sessions) as a Salaried GP, we have a wide range of practices, all of whom are accredited for training or teaching, and who will give you clinical support as you set out on your new career as a qualified GP. They will employ you directly and pay you market rates for 4 sessions a week (for negotiation with practices). HEE EM will pay you through the practice for 6 sessions at the ST4/first year salaried GP standard rate of £5600 per session per annum.

What else?

Health Education England - East Midlands will host development days for all Fellows during the year with guest speakers and opportunities to share your experiences with each other.

Doctors working less than full time can apply for the scheme.

We hope these Fellowships will enhance the careers of the doctors undertaking them, encourage GPs to settle and work in our region, and work towards improving patient care.

Please take a look at the GP Fellowship Project booklet in the Related Documents section at the bottom of this page to give you an idea of the kind of project that are available, however fellowship can be created around your interests.

To apply or express interest please complete a Fellowship Options information form and send this to: GPprogrammes.em@hee.nhs.uk.
