Career Support - Pharmacists

For NHS professionals and employers looking for information on career support for pharmacists.

A pharmacist is an expert in medicines and their use. The majority of pharmacists practice in hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy or in primary care pharmacy, working to ensure that patients get the maximum benefit from their medicines.

Pharmacists advise medical and nursing staff on the selection and appropriate use of medicines. They provide information to patients on how to manage their medicines to ensure optimal treatment. Pharmacists are able to undertake additional training in order to allow them to prescribe medicines for specific conditions.

GP Pharmacist Training Pathway

HEE is making a substantial investment in developing clinical pharmacy in general practice that will create posts for more than 400 pharmacists. The training will provide a significant advance on available support and post-qualification learning experience for GP pharmacists.

The education pathway will equip pharmacists with the necessary knowledge, skills, behaviours and experience for their general practice role. The pathway offers a comprehensive programme of residential study courses, study days, small group learning sets, resources for self-directed study, assessment and support.

Pre-Registration Tutor Training

HEE are running several initiatives that align with the NHS 5 year forward view and the 10 point plan “innovative ways of working”, one which includes pre-reg pharmacist tutors named 'Building Capability of the Community Pre-Registration Pharmacist Tutors'.

Extra training support is needed for community pre-registration trainee pharmacist tutors to demonstrate the range of competencies described in the GPhC guidance on tutoring. An HEE Midlands & East proposal to support the pre-registration pharmacist tutors in General Practice pilot has been successful. In addition support will be needed by the medical supervisors of the post-registration clinical pharmacy pilot.

Training days for pre-registration tutors are planned for Midlands and East, one of which will be hosted by East of England in the summer before next cohort of pre-registration trainee pharmacists commence their training more details to follow.
